After a day of preparation - during which Steven fretted far too much (and Llewellyn did his best to ease said fretting) - things were ready for dinner. The house was clean, or at least the first floor was clean enough for company if you ignored the much used kitchen, the lighting was set to be dim enough for relaxing but not so dim no one could see anything, and there was soft music playing in the background.
When guests arrived they would find that the first floor had, in counterclockwise order, a small entrance hallway, a library, a living room, a dining room, a kitchen, a powder room, and a staircase to the basement and the upstairs bedrooms. The decor was much like the boarding house side, with Edwardian and Egyptian stylings, reflective surfaces, and moon motifs almost everywhere. But it also had personal touches like a shelf of souvenirs in the library, personal photographs (mostly Steven and Llewellyn, granted), and a fish tank in the living room with three goldfish, a mix of other fish to support the ecosystem, and an eclectic collection of aquarium decorations such as a small house, a pyramid, and a sarcophagus.
The dining room was set up to allow buffet style service with seating around the main table. Was the dining room normally this big? Don't worry about it. In deference to everyone's different dietary needs, the food allowed for mixing and matching of preferences. There was a salad and next to it were variousmoddable toppings such as additional vegetables, cheese, croutons, and more. Different dressings were also available.
For the main course there was a variety of raviolis with assortedmoddable, but no poultry, pork, or shellfish fillings such as short rib, balsamic mushroom, spinach artichoke, beef sausage, pumpkin, and more. The again moddable sauces that could be added included marinara, puttanesca, alfredo, and brown butter and sage. There were loaves of fresh baked bread as well as garlic bread for anyone who might like it.
Desserts were various baked desserts, including apple and strawberry pies and cinnamon rolls. To drink there was beer, wines that Llewellyn had selected as being good to go with the meal, as well as grape juice, sweet tea, water, and assorted soft drinks. All of the food was labeled to clearly mark the ingredients, to indicate which were vegan, and so on.
And, of course, since there was far too much food for even every resident of the boarding house to eat in one sitting, there were containers provided for guests to use to take as many leftovers as they liked.
Llewellyn was dressed in one of his customary suits- well, mostly. In deference to being both indoors and his own home, neither hat nor suit jacket were present. Steven, for his part, had on on one of his nicer short sleeved shirts and khaki trousers. They were, of course, still rumpled even though they hadn't been when he put them on.
With everything now ready, all that was missing was the guests.
[open for the boarding house residents and great slow play justice]
